How to Avoid Incorrect Mileage After Installing a Used BCM (Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, Hummer H3)

When replacing a used Body Control Module (BCM) in a 2004-2012 Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, or Hummer H3, the instrument cluster can adopt the wrong mileage if the used BCM is installed before it is cloned. Once the cluster learns the higher mileage from the used BCM, reinstalling the original BCM will not reverse the change.

In some cases, a used BCM is already installed and the mileage is incorrect. To correct this, the original BCM data must be cloned into the replacement module. Any relearn procedures that were previously performed will need to be repeated after the cloned BCM is installed.

Three Ways to Prevent Mileage Issues

  1. Clone the used BCM before installing it. This is the simplest way to avoid the problem. Cloning the BCM first prevents the cluster from adopting the mileage stored in the used module. See our 2004-2007 BCM Clone Programming Service and 2008-2012 BCM Clone Programming Service.
  2. Install a new instrument cluster. A new cluster will learn the correct mileage from a properly cloned BCM and will not carry over incorrect data.
  3. Send your original cluster in for a reset. If you want to keep the original cluster, it can be reset so it will learn the correct mileage from the cloned BCM after reinstallation. See our Cluster Reset Service.

Cloning the BCM before installation is the most reliable way to avoid mileage errors on these vehicles. If the incorrect mileage has already been written to the cluster, a cluster reset or replacement is required to correct it.
